Welcome
Mr. McKim's Freshwater Science elective class is made up of 7th and 8th graders that have an interest in learning about freshwater systems. We use Chester Creek, our neighborhood creek that runs through the school property as the focus for our studies, monitoring its health and learning about the aquatic and riparian ecosystem we live in. Students explore the three different realms of water quality, physical, chemical and biological using Chester Creek as our sampling location. Students are active in gathering temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, and turbidity along with stage, flow and stream cross-section data out at the creek. These data are then analyzed by the students to assess the stream's health and used as a discussion piece to discover the human effects the east Anchorage community has on Chester Creek.
Students also learn about our drinking water supply here in Anchorage, sources of human-caused pollution and what makes measures they can take to preserve the quality and quantity of our drinking water and local freshwater bodies.
